The Grossmont College Griffin women's basketball team came out on top in a 77-73 Pacific Coast Athletic Conference South contest against San Diego City at Grossmont.

 A pair of Griffins (5-13, 2-0 PCAC-S) scored in double figures as Khiya Mohamed (32 points, 15 rebounds) and Kyra Bruesewitz (20 points) led the attack for the home squad.
 
Four different Knights (10-10, 2-1 PCAC-S) scored in double figures led by Evangeline Morga with 17 points.  Samera Henry had a double-double with 15 points and 17 rebounds.
 

 "Tonight was a great win," head coach Karen Caires stated post game.  "I was really happy that it was a team win.  The most important thing is that we started taking control of the ball, which gave them the lead."  Both teams had at least a nine-point lead at one point in the contest.

 "We were able to get Khiya Mohamed involved a lot more against their big.  Complements go out to Khiya and Kyra, and to the team as well to find them in their strengths.  The team really took advantage of shot selection tonight."
 

The Griffins jumped out with a three pointer by Bruesewitz on their first possession of the game.  Near the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at 12-all with two minutes left.  Grossmont put up a quick five point burst to take a 17-12 lead with 80 seconds left.  Cities Shaterion Alexander put in a layup with just three seconds left in the quarter.

 During the second quarter, the Griffins put even more room between them and City as they outscored their counterparts by four points to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.
 

City came out hot in the third quarter as they flipped the script taking a 56-49 lead going into the final segment.  Grossmont gave up nine turnovers and committed more than the allotted five fouls in the quarter.  By going over the limit, City went 14-of-16 from the charity stripe.  That gave them an extra 10 points as GC went 4-of-8 from the line.

 The Griffin defense came back with a vengeance in the fourth quarter allowing City to shoot 28.6 percent from the field, while GC was hitting on 66.7 percent from the field.
 

When it came down to the end, the score was tied 67-all with 1:10 left.  With 52 seconds left, the Knights' Powell was whistled for a reach in foul, then was called for a technical foul.  The Griffins knocked down all four of the free throws, on their way to hitting 10 of their 14 opportunities in the final minute.

 Grossmont will continue their home stand with another PCAC South contest on Friday (Jan. 27) as San Diego Mesa (6-11, 1-1 PCAC-S) for a 5:00 p.m. tip.  That will be the opening of a Griffin doubleheader, as the Men will face Southwestern after the ladies.
