Men’s Water Polo Finishes Regular Season Strong with Three Straight Wins
The Grossmont College men's water polo team finished the regular season winning eight of their final ten matches. The Griffins capped off an impressive regular season with a trio of victories over Ventura (22-13), the 10th ranked Chargers of Cypress (14-13 in O.T.), and a very formidable El Camino Squad which brought their overall record to an outstanding 20-9. This final push solidifies the Griffins' status as a formidable force as they look to claim the programs 29th Conference Championship and an automatic bid to the Southern California Playoffs.
Throughout the season Grossmont's squad demonstrated both depth and versatility by regularly rotating at least fourteen athletes, often making wholesale six for six substitutions, which played a key role in their 20-win achievement. The group's three-game winning streak to finish the season underscored the team's momentum as they head into postseason competition. Head Coach Ty Lackey expressed pride in his team's dedication and progress and emphasized their strong work ethic and focus on improvement as critical to their success.
Heading into the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Championships, next weekend at Southwestern College, Freshman Xylan Rotsart (Helix HS) and Sophomore Jake Simpson (Grossmont HS) are 2nd and 4th in the conference in goal scoring with 90 and 79 goals respectively. Freshman Ryan Motta (Grossmont HS) and Sophomores Lucas Draper (Patrick Henry) and Harrison Eaton (Patrick Henry) are all three in the top 5 (1st,3rd,5th) in assists notching 55,53, and 50 respectively. Xylen Rotsart leads the conference with 67 ejections drawn, while Freshman goal keepers Zeke Antunez(Helix HS) and Lon Kun-Szabo (Patrick Henry HS) rank 3rd and 4th in saves while splitting the job in net for the Griffins. Sophomore Center Defender Dustin Walter leads the Griffins in steals, as he has been an imposing force defending the middle all year. With a potent mix of veteran leadership and emerging talent, Griffin water polo team looks ready to make a deep run in postseason play.
