Saturday, October 19 - Grossmont College football hosted Riverside City College for its first conference game of the fall (Southern California Football Association, National Division, Southern League). Despite the 55-12 loss, the Griffins forced 4 fumbles on the Tigers (3 of 4 fumbles recovered).
The most remarkable fumble of the game occurred in the third quarter. It resulted in Grossmont's second touchdown against the Tigers.
After a drive filled of incomplete passes, Griffin #13 Jack Browning punted for 51 yards to the Riverside 7. Without a fair catch, Riverside fumbled the ball for the fourth time and Griffin #21 Myles Sadler recovered it. Sadler scored Grossmont's second touchdown of the game (34-12).
Punter Jack Browning proved to be a huge asset to Griffin football against Riverside; He totaled 317 yards in 7 punts against the Tigers (45.3 yard average). Browning is the only kicker/punter of the team. His punting average has risen since the first game from 37.4 to 45.3 yards per game, with his longest punt recorded at 69 yards. Browning is a 5'11 freshman out of West Hills High.
Prior to Browing's punt and Sadler's touchdown, Grossmont forced three additional fumbles.
The first fumble occurred in the first quarter to deny Riverside's first attack (0-0). The second fumble was again in the first made by Griffin #37 Dayne Fehoko, and then recovered by Fehoko. Riverside's third (but not last!) fumble was in the second quarter, resulting in three fumbles for the Tigers before the half (Grossmont recovered 2 of the 3 fumbles)!
It was 20-6 at the half, and the game completed 55-12 Riverside.
